Clàssic Gaudí is the Passeig de Gràcia paving tile in miniature: a scale replica of the grey hexagonal tile, the famous Barcelona panot, that covers the pavements of the city's best-known avenue, home to Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. If you have walked around Barcelona, you have stepped on it.
It is the design Antoni Gaudí created in 1904, with a starfish, a conch shell and seaweed, in the version made in 1997 to pave the avenue: the relief is inverted, set into the piece, so it stands up to foot traffic. Gaudí had meant it for the floors of Casa Batlló, and it was first laid at La Pedrera.
Each piece is handmade by Mosaics Martí, the hydraulic tile workshop Bernat Martí opened in Manresa in 1913 and his grandchildren revived in the 1980s. They still work the traditional way: the colour is poured by hand into the mould, the piece is pressed and left to cure naturally, without firing. That is why every tile shows slight variations in tone and texture that make it one of a kind.
It comes in a white box with a hexagonal window, ready to give: the Barcelona souvenir everyone recognises. To display it upright, pair it with the Suport Fusta 10 wooden stand, sold separately or as a pack with the tile.
